Bullies on a school bus

I get asked why I wrote “CONSEQUENCES” and the simple answer is because of my grandson Bryce who is autistic, but has to attend a regular high school. He is bullied repeatedly. He isn’t a small boy, he can hold his own, but faced with several bullies he doesn’t have a chance. Also, and this was quite rightly pointed out to me, if he fights back and beats them down, then he becomes the bully. I don’t want him to become a bully.

This video, http://youtu.be/UsimZNUstEc shows a young boy also with special needs, being bullied. You will notice the two bullies are much bigger than the boy. The bus driver does nothing to stop it. This is very typical, nobody wants to get involved, even the adults. The bullies at least are facing court proceedings. The driver did as well and was acquitted. But the whole episode is shameful.

ImageEven worse to me were the comments made about this poor boy. He was called a pussy, a wuss, needs to learn to fight, and that he deserved to be bullied in this manner. I am totally ashamed of these people, they deserve the same treatment as they get in “CONSEQUENCES.”

Bullies in the Workplace

Being bullied in school is bad enough, especially nowadays with cyber bullying that puts it on a totally different level. Being picked on by morons in school who don’t know better, or who think they are cool for abusing someone who isn’t as ‘perfect’ as they are, makes life hellish for the victims, and suicidal when the mistreatment goes viral.

But what about the working adults? Are you being bullied in your workplace, or are you a bully yourself, stepping on people to get to your goal?

You are being bullied if you have to endure any of the following:

  • Being shouted or swore at
  • Humiliated or embarrassed
  • Forced to work longer to finish your work without extra pay
  • Constantly overlooked for advancement
  • Threatened with dismissal if you take vacation time
  • Having your work unjustly ridiculed
  • Being ignored
  • Someone else taking credit for your work
  • Not being included in…

Keeping Kids Safe Online – Part 1

MrTechBot's avatarMrTechBot

As adults we have a responsibility to teach our children how to be safe online and to teach them how to use the WWW; but how do we do that if we ourselves don’t know how? So today’s article will be to educate adults about the internet and how you can keep your kids safe online.

I want to stress that I do not know you or your family and in no way do I want to come across as telling you how to raise your child(ren). If at any point in this article it seems this way, I sincerely apologize.

Study: Unattractive People Are Bullied More At Work

What’s Your Favorite Word?

hopemccain's avatarImpossible Words

Personally, mine is a tie between “fuzz” and “spoonula.”  But the reason I want to know your favorite word is because I’d like to use it in a story here on my blog.

Starting now (Friday) and continuing through the weekend, I’d like you to post a comment with your favorite word (you do not need to have a WordPress account to comment on my blog).  That’s all.  Easy, right?  On Sunday night, I’ll compile them into a list and I will use every single one in a story.

I’m looking forward to seeing what some of your favorite words are!  🙂

A little more information about CONSEQUENCES and the book launch

CONSEQUENCES Book CoverThe subject matter of the book is bullying, and the effect that is has on the victims. Very often, the ones who are picked on commit suicide, or strike out and start shooting. Whenever there is a school shooting, debates begin about gun control, which masks the real problem. Seventy Five percent of school shootings are done by bullied kids.

When the media make their reports and interview the survivors or their parents, they are told that the shooter, or shooters, were strange or weird. They were Goths, strange looking, kept to themselves, sickly, not normal. Nobody says they were bullied and their lives were made hellish by cruel kids who relished persecuting them. If it is ever mentioned they were bullied, it’s said like an aside, as though that didn’t have anything to do with their ultimate actions.

The Columbine shooting was done by by two gifted students that were bullied all through high school. It seems that everyone was aware that they were bullied, but no one did anything about it.

Teachers only report four percent of bullying they witness. Other children don’t intervene when they see someone being harassed, in fear of being targeted by the same persecutors. The victims don’t usually tell their parents or teachers what is happening because they fear the repercussions. Very often the bullying gets worse after adult intervention, as usually the punishment if any to the bullies is nothing more than a talking to.

Cyber bullying is even worse. The child is made to believe that their whole town hates them, and if it goes viral, then the whole world. How must if feel to come across a website, or a Facebook page, that is dedicated entirely to hating you? Spreading lies and gossip with no ounce of truth that you can’t even defend. It’s bad enough if you’re an adult faced with this, but when you’re a child it must be devastating. It is no wonder that many of these children take their own lives.

I know of a mother who did just this to one of her daughter’s schoolmates, and she was taken to court after her victim committed suicide. She was acquitted of any crime.

I saw a grown man pick up his son from the school bus and then mimic a disabled girl who had got off the same bus, laughing at her walk. He was inadvertently teaching his son to be as big a bully as himself.

It continues into work. Well over half of working adults get bullied. They don’t get beaten, unless it’s at home, but they get ignored, talked down to, have their work re-done, don’t get promoted, made to work overtime for nothing, get laughed at, shouted at, and all other kinds of mistreatment.

Domestic violence is bullying. People can hate going home, just as they hate going to work. Women can often be worse bullies than men, and just like at school, victims don’t like to report bullying. They fear losing their jobs, or appearing to be weak. So they put up with it until they get to their breaking point, and then we have fatalities.

I hope CONSEQUENCES raises people’s awareness of this terrible problem and in some way causes change. Too many people are dying and having their lives ruined. It’s time it stopped.

Social Business and ForestNation

Social Business and ForestNation

I recently had the chance to speak to Andrew Pothecary from www.forestnation.com  We spoke because in our own ways, we are trying to make a difference. In Andrew’s case, it is to help people connect better with each other by caring for the environment. His website states:

“ForestNation is a peaceful world rich in resources and beauty, where we care for each other and our environment.

You can become a citizen of ForestNation by growing your own tree at home, and we’ll plant even more in developing countries around the world. Your interaction will make a difference and have a positive impact on all aspects of our daily lives.

It’s fun and easy to grow your own tree, but even if you fail the first time you’ll learn a lot and you must keep trying. Growing and planting a tree is a symbolic and important act that we can all do, no matter who you are or where you live. Growing your own tree will help you connect with nature, and help us all connect to each other.

ForestNation is a “Social Business”; it’s our business is to create a positive impact on society and the environment. We combine commercial, social and environmental goals equally. In fact our social and environmental goals core to our commercial ones, and operating as a profiting making business is fundamental to our overall objective. We believe that if we can make successful business out of doing good then lots more good things will come about.”

I totally agree with him and so too does Julian Lennon, who was only too willing to lend his name to the cause.

For my own part, I’m trying to make a difference in “Social Business” by making more people aware of the problem of bullying. I never gave it much thought until my grandson Bryce told me about his experiences, and it inspired me to write a novel called Consequences. Although the book revolves around the character James, I detail some of the many different forms of bullying that really hurt people. A lot of the time, people don’t realize they are bullies, or are being bullied, and if this book makes them more aware then I will have made a difference, just as Andrew is doing with ForestNation.

If you would like to help in Andrew’s noble quest, then I encourage you to visit his site or go to one of these links:
